Things had been going a bit better lately. I've been doing some good work on the Circulation Manual and snarky e-mails from the bosses were down to the absolute minimum and then...
MICROMANAGER STRIKES AGAIN!
This time, she wants us to move the computer so that we're facing the front of the circ desk at all times. The compuer doesn't work that way, it's extremely uncomfortable to type in that position, but we don't want the students to feel ignored for 1/8th of a second! No!
And, she says we are no longer allowed to help people. That's not our job. We're supposed to send them off to the reference librarians if they so much as ask for a tissue. Problem is that there are no reference librarians on my shift. So, I'm supposed to tell the kids to come back in the morning. You try telling some kid who has a paper due in the morning that they have to come back around 10 am when the ref people get here. Yeah. Good luck with that.
Also, we're looking too idle. WE NEED TO WORK MORE! This woman obviously has her head up her ass where the circ desk is concerned.
So, from what I've heard, the problem people have with the circ desk is that we're unhelpful and snarky. Well, with our new policies in place, we're only making that problem worse.
Never take a library management course and then work at a library that's being managed in a style that Dilbert's boss would approve of. Because, when you get an e-mail from your boss accusing you of not doing your job, screwing up when you are working and generally being an asshole, then you reply to the e-mail (sadly, there's no '24 hour' rule with e-mail)refuting everything your boss says and quoting passages from your management book.
Yeah. Now I'm just waiting to be fired.
